Our Family of Academies
  • Love each other and know we are loved

    (John 13:34-35)

Who We Are: Our Christian Foundation and Context

There has been a school in Dorrington since the 1800s. The original school was linked to  St Edward's Church and the Trustees at Netley Hall. The Church of England foundation has been embedded in school life for centuries.

The current school site is opposite St Edward's Church. On joining the Diocese of Hereford Multi Academy Trust, the governors decided to change the name of the school from Dorrington to St Edward's. This was part of a fresh step following a particularly challenging period of time in the school's history, but also to ensure the Christian foundations and strong partnership were recognised by all. It seemed appropriate also as St Edward showed love towards others in many ways, including giving money to the poor and towards religious buildings.

St Edward's Primary School is tiny. Currently, there are 31 pupils taught in a key stage 1 and key stage 2 class.  The family feeling is evident from the moment you walk into school. Love is at the core of everything.

John:13 34-35 - ‘A new command I give you, love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another’.

Our school is situated in the middle of a village called Dorrington just off the A49. Our rural location is obvious, we are on a tractor route and the children love to watch various crops being transported past the playground. This has inspired them to grow their own food and all are encouraged to purchase fresh produce at the end of the day when harvesting has taken place.

Our two school dogs, Mabel and Dottie are a significant feature in and around school. They make a fuss of staff when they arrive,  welcome children and parents at the gate in the mornings, support and comfort anyone who may be feeling sad or anxious. All visitors are warmly welcomed by our school dogs.

We have a high proportion of children with SEND 50%. There is a private nursery on our school site where some of our children come from to attend reception. However, many of our children join us as mid-year transfers from other schools. 22% of pupils are eligible for pupil premium. Attendance is very good, 2024-25 whole school attendance was 96.1%.

What partnerships does our school have within the Diocese?

Partnership with St Edward's Church continue to this day. In addition, the school links with Hereford Cathedral for Trust wide events of Worship and celebration. In addition, the school has been part of the Diocese of Hereford mufti Academy Trust since 2017.

How do our values affect our choice of curriculum?

OfSTED stated "The curriculum is ambitious. Leaders have carefully mapped out learning to ensure it reflects the aims of the national curriculum. Learning is sequenced well so it builds on what pupils have done before."

"There is a strong focus on pupils’ personal development. Pupils learn to respect and value other faiths, cultures and beliefs. Pupils are taught to be active citizens. They work closely in the community, doing things like holding a village carol concert. Leaders plan experiences for the pupils that develop their understanding of the wider world. For example, they recently visited Birmingham to learn about different communities. Pupils have a clear understanding of fundamental British values. The school’s values of love, forgiveness and trust are at the heart of school life. Pupils reflect these values by being well-behaved and kind. "

The school’s vision led the development of the rigorous curriculum, its ambition, its inclusivity and its clear pedagogical underpinning. Together with robust governance from the Diocese of Hereford Multi- Academy Trust and clear systems and processes our ambition for each child is realised.

How do our values develop relationships with other schools, partners and the community?

Our partnership with Condover School is at the heart of our vision and values.

After a turbulent time in St Edward's history, the love, support and leadership which was provided by Condover CE Primary School ensured not only pupils but also staff and governors were able to flourish because they knew they were loved. The values of Love Trust and forgiveness is lived out by all as a consequence of this great partnership.

Collaboration with our DHMAT partner schools and those in our locality as well as local organisations such as Shrewsbury Town Football Club, Concord College, village gardens. Ensures all children flourish.

As a result of the rich vision of the school and the work of its community, each child knows they are loved and loves in return.  The warm, caring, trusting ethos that infuses every part of the school, its building, its people and its prayers leads to a school which ensures its vision is lived, every day.
