What is the level of expertise and training of staff in relation to children with SEND and how will specialist expertise be secured?
Our SENCO is very experienced in this role and has worked at St Edward’s for a number of years, meaning that she is able to understand and meet the needs of our families. She is also the Senior Mental Health Lead and has recently attended training in this role. She is allocated time each week to manage SEN provision.
We have two teaching assistants, including a higher level teaching assistant (HLTA) who have been trained to support all pupils. Specific training includes: dyslexia, dyscalculia, phonics, attachment, autism, managing challenging behaviour Cool Kids, No Worries.
The school enjoys good working relationships with a wide range of professionals who provide specialist services to children with SEND and their families. The external specialists may:
- Act in an advisory capacity
- Extend expertise of school staff
- Provide additional assessment
- Support a child directly
- Suggest statutory assessment is advisable
- Consult with all parties involved with the child
We secure specialist expertise by using our additional needs budget. This is used to support children and young people with SEND. If a child has complex special educational needs, we could also receive additional funding from the Local Authority to meet the agreed outcomes.
